Neurofeeback and Medication

Outcome Comparison

 

Inattention Reduced to age appropriate level or eliminated as measured with computerized testing.Attention problem returns when off medication.  Medication does not cure the problem.

Impulsivity Reduced to age appropriate level or eliminated as measured with computerized testing.No change when off medication.  Remains with person for life.

Hyperactivity Reduced to age appropriate level or eliminated as measured with computerized testing.No change off medication.  Decreases to adult level by age 18.

Diagnosis of ADHD After completion of training, as measure by computer tests and behavioural questionnaires no longer meets the criteria for ADHDThe person remains categorized with ADHD for life.  Over 70% end up with all the difficulties in adult life.

Medication Side-Effects96% stopped taking medication by the time training is completed.  Neurofeedback costs about as much as 3 years of medication but provides a life-time solution.Over 43 know side-effects from mild to severe.No studies of long term side-effects.Medication must be taken for life.ADHD remains a life-long chronic problem.

Learning, Academic Difficulties and Cognitive MeasuresBegins to perform at age level. Improvements of up 1.5 grade points and IQ increase of up 10 points.While on medication person is better able to learn.  However, at times like evening homework, at play or in the community when no medication is used difficulties reappear.

Social SkillsPerson begins to learn social skills and behaving at age level.University of California at Irvine using drug company studies showed children that used stimulant medication had no better social outcomes including arrest rate than those that did not use medication.
